July 16 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International said on Tuesday it would invest $600 million to open a manufacturing facility in Colorado to produce its Zyn nicotine pouches to help meet demand for alternatives to traditional tobacco products in the U.S.
The plant is expected to begin preliminary operations by 2025 and create 500 jobs in the state, the world’s biggest tobacco company by market value said, adding that it would invest the amount over the next two years through one of its U.S.
affiliates.
Philip Morris entered the U.S. market after it bought Zyn-parent Swedish Match in a $16 billion deal in 2022, as part of its efforts to provide alternatives to traditional cigarettes amid greater health awareness and stricter regulation.
The company has benefited from strong demand for Zyn, which it says does not contain tobacco, in the United States, with shipments rising nearly 80% in the first quarter over the year earlier.
But in June, Philip Morris suspended the nationwide sales on Zyn.com following a subpoena from the District of Columbia, which requested information about its compliance with the state’s 2022 ban on the sale of all flavored tobacco.
Philip Morris is also seeking to launch its flagship heated tobacco device iqos iluma ione in the U.S., with a test rollout expected in the second quarter – which the company is set to report next week.
But the plans faced pushback from anti-tobacco and health groups, which have written to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to oppose IQOS-related applications the company has submitted to the agency, according to a Reuters report earlier on Tuesday. Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented. As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10, 500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

July 16 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International said on Tuesday it would
invest $600 million to open a manufacturing facility
in Colorado to produce its Zyn nicotine pouches
to help meet demand for alternatives to traditional tobacco products in the U.S.
The plant is expected to begin preliminary operations by
2025 and create 500 jobs in the state, the world’s biggest tobacco company by market value said, adding that it would invest
the amount over the next two years through one of its U.S.
affiliates.
Philip Morris entered the U.S. market after it bought Zyn-parent
Swedish Match in a $16 billion deal in 2022, as part of its
efforts to provide alternatives to traditional cigarettes amid
greater health awareness and stricter regulation.
The company has benefited from strong demand for Zyn, which
it says does not contain tobacco, in the United States, with shipments rising nearly 80%
in the first quarter over the year earlier.
But in June, Philip Morris suspended the nationwide sales on Zyn.com following
a subpoena from the District of Columbia, which requested information about its compliance with the
state’s 2022 ban on the sale of all flavored tobacco.
Philip Morris is also seeking to launch its flagship heated tobacco device
iqos iluma ione in the U.S., with a test rollout expected in the second quarter –
which the company is set to report next
week.
But the plans faced pushback from anti-tobacco and health groups, which have written to
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to oppose
IQOS-related applications the company has submitted to the agency, according to a Reuters report earlier on Tuesday.

like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.
This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!

where it’s insane.’
He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me
and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go,
‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This
is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls
in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel
took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’
2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box
office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half
that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie
cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as
divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that the
film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and
fully committed to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be a
film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured
as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot
of fun.’

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major
candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed
by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely
limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico
during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected
of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work
for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez
said.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the
race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both
appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a
professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that
also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona
ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by
Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent
months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook
at the Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty
knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is
Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs
Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh,
the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this
is a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup
is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by
way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision.
Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just
the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat
rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense
of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one
bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet
(this part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana
soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep
into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub
designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week and it went viral, gaining more
then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many users took their initial silence as proof that
they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever since
it premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it
had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which
saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin)
brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was never
the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the
Batman series was really just the random inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social media to share their frustration.

The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up to the
2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes what could have been a
unique character study into a bloated encore that goes out with
a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a
waste of time. It’s just tired, not particularly interesting,
but it does look good from a production design standpoint.’

To most Australians, it is the bold and
brassy version sung by Gina Riley, who also plays
Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop
culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more stripped back that builds
to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

to Instagram and viewers were quick to issue their shock at the surprising cover version.
